Yuvan Disappoints Again?????

It’s a well known factor that Yuvan Shankar Raja has established himself as one of the most successful music directors in Tamil. His way of orchestrating the songs is pretty innovative which is widely accepted by critics. It’s also said that he is the current Youth Icon in TFM.

Yuvan’s greatest strength is his BGM score. When it comes to background score, Yuvan is always ahead of other composers (am not referring IR or ARR here :)). But it is sad to know that he often tries his hands in any foreign album or in his dad’s compositions for his BGM.

Just before few months I came to know that the 7G BGM is certainly inspired from Michel Nyman’s keyboard (which you can find here). Few weeks back it was said that he has used “Poove poochudava” music in Yaradi Nee Mohini movie. Now one more here…

The much talked about background music of Katradhu Tamil seems to have been inspired from his dad’s song “Manadhile oru pattu” from Dhayam Onnu movie. In KT movie, this music is played when childhood Prabha takes Anandhi to a hill to show tiger. When I watched this movie, this piece of music literally brought tears in my eyes. Such a haunting instrumental piece it is. So I felt really bad when I heard that this is an inspired one. But, this can also be an accidental one. Of course, coincidences are very common in music.

Listen it Carefully - This Week

Yaaro Yarukkul – Chennai-600028 – Yuvan Shankar Raja – SPB, Chithra

This is one of the best songs of the year 2007. The way this song has been composed shows that Yuvan is a Chip off the Old Block. Yuvan has followed his father’s footsteps in orchestrating this song. No doubt, this one shows that Yuvan has understood the nuances of composing a melody song with simple yet powerful orchestration.

I did not pay much of heeds to this song at first. My friend had always been forcing me to listen to this song. Just before few months I started listening to this song with interest. I was mesmerized. Two parts which I liked in this song are given below. If you are passionate about music and you like enjoying the subtle orchestration of the songs, just listen to the following pieces in this song carefully.

1. Group of Violins in the background
This piece comes in both the stanzas (Saranam). I am mentioning the first stanza here. At 1:57, Chithra starts with “Oorai vellum thogai nane” – Piece of violin – “Unnal indru thotru ponen” – same piece of violin but now it continues to grow along with the lyrics “Kannal yuthame nee sedhai nithame”. The king SPB says “Nindrai indru minnal keetrai” – Piece of violin – “Nitham vangum mooch katrai” – same piece again but continues to grow along with the tune till the end of the stanza. Listen it carefully. You’ll be mesmerized… This is perfectly Maestro’s style of using instruments. Hats off to Yuvan!!!

2. The humming piece before the 1st stanza
Next is the humming piece which comes along with the 1st prelude which is so soothing to ears. It starts at 1:21. Well done Yuvan!!!

Despite all the above, the unwanted beats in the song are really bothering me.

Dasavatharam Fever Grips

There are very few movies in Tamil which set very big expectations before they hit the screens. Dasavatharam is one such movie in recent days. Dasavatharam is the talk of the town now. Every fan of Tamil cinema is awaiting its release in June. No secret is revealed out yet. But still so many rumors are being spread out about this movie and its theme. We have to wait till June to see if these so called rumors are facts or fiction. Let’s have a quick overview on this movie, budget etc.

Music – a letdown
Music plays a vital role in offbeat movies like Dasavatharam. Songs of this movie were not up to the marks and have disappointed most of the Tamil audiences. All the sites, blogs (including my blogJ) have rated this as a mediocre album and it doesn’t really stand out. Many fans have raised a question “Why Himesh”. Yes, why did Kamal choose Himesh to set tunes? Why did Ulaga Nayagan treat this movie, which is said to be the milestone not only in his career, but also in Film industry with such an average music? Hope at least Devi Prasad comes out with an extraordinary BGM for this movie.
Anyways, let’s forget about the Music and speak something about the movie.

Budget of the movie
Initially when the movie was started, the budget was set as INR.30Cr. But later on, it exceeded the proposed budget. The latest buzz in Kollywood says that the budget has touched 100Cr. Kamal is paid 7Cr as salary for this movie according to sources on web.

Roles that our "Nayagan" plays:
As each one of us knows, Kamal plays 10 different characters in this movie. As a Tamilian, I am very much proud that this versatile actor is the first actor in the world to don ten incarnations in a single movie. The secrecy which they have been maintaining since the first day of shoot is laudable. There are so many stories revolving in and around Tamilnadu. I went through some sites to collect the info on the roles which the actor plays. While Kamal plays only 10 roles in the movie, I am wondering that I managed to collect 15 different roles. Following are the roles don by Kamal in Dasavatharam (as said by those sites).

1. Sri Ramanujar
2. President Bush
3. An Afghan leader
4. Lankan Tamil
5. An old lady
6. A young lady
7. A doctor
8. A police officer
9. A Robber
10. Japanese
11. Chinese
12. A black
13. Daler Mehndi

So nothing is final until you watch the movie in June. The secret still remains secret.

Awards that Kamal may bag:
Buzz that has been revolving around ever since the movie hit the floors is Kamal will receive Oscar Award for his performance in Dasavatharam. If it happens, Kamal will be the 2nd Indian to bag this Award, with Satyajit Ray, who was the first Indian and till date the only Indian to have received this prestigious award.

Kamal may receive National Award as well from Indian Government. Other awards which may knock his door include, TN – State Award, Filmfare Award, Cannes Award, CIFF Award etc. We got to wait for one more year to get the results.J

Hype and the result: Created a very big hype last year by this time, but failed to live up to the expectations. Rajni factor saved the movie.
Box-office result: Blockbuster

Movie and Year: Anniyan, 2005
Hype and the result: With big expectations, movie turned out to be an ordinary movie with a strong message which is usual with Shankar.
Box-office result: Blockbuster

Movie and Year: Pudhupettai, 2006
Hype and the result: Not much hyped as the previous two but people were waiting for this for a long time which turned out to be utter garbage despite the positive reviews. Movie had an extraordinary music by Yuvan.
Box-office result: Flop

Movie and Year: Vettaiyadu Vilayadu, 2006
Hype and the result: The movie would not have had such a big hype if it was released on time. Its delay made it big. Well received by audience with mixed review.
Box-office result: Super hit

Conclusion:
To conclude, even if it fails to impress you as a movie, Kamal would certainly satisfy Tamil audiences to a great extent with his phenomenal performances in ten different roles. I hope both the actor and movie satisfy the audience and create a new history in World Cinema.

Dasavatharam Music - Poll Results

A poll on Dasavatharam was conducted and now the results are ready to be announced.

Total Participated: 25

16% (4 Votes) of the participants say that music is excellent, while 12% (3 votes) of them say that its good.
Not Bad is what majority of the particapants have chosen. 40% (10 Votes) of participants said that music is not bad and worth listening while 32% (8 votes) have voiced that its a worst album.

My opinion is since we have atleast two good numbers "Mukuntha" and "Oh Sanam", and one average song "Kallai mattum", I would rate this album as a "Not bad" album.

My Current Playlist. Here is the list of songs am currently listening to.

1. Pudhu Pudhu from Dham Dhoom by Harris

Sounds like a Club number. A peppy song from Harris. Benny's vocals is a great plus. Amazing orchestration and instrunment handling. This is one good number from harris after Thoodhu Varuma, IMO. Genuinity of this song is a Question Mark. Coz, Of late, Harris is getting caught very often. One of the songs in Varanamayiram, Adiye Kolludhe (which they released to promote the album) has been lifted from West - Love Bomb.

2. Yengeyo Partha Mayakkam from Yaradi Nee Mohini by Yuvan.

A pleasant melody. Lyrics speak it all. Expressing how a boy feels when he meets his girl. Udit's atrocious vocals spoil the song completely. Rather than calling Udit as atrocious, I would prefer writing atrocious Yuvan killing this song by asking Udit to render. Tabla usage is mesmerising. Yuvan has managed to maintain the rhythm throughout the song which makes the flow of the song undisturbed.

3. Mukundha Mukundha from Dasavatharam by Himesh.

Sadhana Sargam's rendering for this song takes the song to next level. Saw the picturisation now in Audio Releasing function (telecast in Kalaignar TV). Looked good. Asin acts in this song. IMO, orchestration of this song has strong hindi flavor (beats etc).

4. Anbe Enanbe from Dham Dhoom by Harris.

A soothing melody with fantastic rendering by Harish Ragavendra. Harish is back after a brief hiatus. Excellent Rendering. Especially when he raises his pitch in "malaiyinile pirakkum nadhi" lines. The flute piece as prelude, interlude and postlude is good. am sure you'll enjoy this track.

5. Uyirile from Vellithirai by GV Prakash

A pleasant soothing number with minimal beats and orchestration. This one proves that this young composer is really talented. Naresh Iyer's rendering needs a special mention here.

6. Paravaye Engu Irukkirai from Tamil MA by Yuvan.

Even though the song is 8 months old, it is still there in my list. Youngest raja has proven that he would deliver the best quality if the movie demands. Understanding the theme of the movie, yuvan has delevered the best music in this movie. This is not only for this movie, also the best of Yuvan. The background beats in this song is very very innovative. Ilayaraja's vocals would simply move you. The guitar piece is the second prelude is truly mesmerizing. As a whole, this song is worth listening many times.
