Music Review: Vamanan by Yuvan Shankar Raja

Another superb album from Yuvan. A must listen.

Orchestration is truly good in Edho Seigirai. It is male singer's rendition which spoils this beautiful melody. Yes, it is the same Javed Ali who killed the beautiful song "siragugal" in Sarvam. Female singer Sowmya sounds too good in this song. Roopkumar is better than Javed Ali in "Oru Devadhai", a beautiful ghazal type melody. Use of Solo violin in pre, inter and postludes is catchy. Singer's voice is good but pronunciation really sucks. Nevertheless, this is one heck of song.

"Enge Povadhu" is another melody orchestrated with minimal music. Soulful singing of Vijay Yesudoss elevates this song. A slow number that grows in you after few listens.

Club number "Lucky Star" sounds better than the fast paced "Money Money". Lucky star sung by Blaze may go well with the masses.

"Edho Seigirai", "Enge Povadhu" and "Oru Devadhai" are on the loop in my play list. Addictive melodies from Yuvan.

It's high time that Yuvan realizes how important singer selection is to make an album successful. What in Roopkumar makes him feel better that our Hariharan. Why can't he prefer our talented singer Karthik to Javed Ali???

Overall, Vamanan is on par with Sarvam. Of course, Sarvam is his best in recent times!

Regards,
Vinith

I don't know much of YSR. I only listened to his Telugu albums. I will surely try this out.

Naani,

If you had loved his song sung by Udit in "AMAV" (I'm sorry if i'm spelling it wrong), you would surely love this. This album is incredible with three fantastic melodies.

I listened to the soundtrack and certainly give it the thumbs up! Nice energy and feel...

However...When you day "What in Roopkumar makes him feel better that our Hariharan. Why can't he prefer our talented singer Karthik to Javed Ali???" - Why do you create disparity between people/ cultures.... why for you is there an US and THEM mentality??? Are'nt we all Indian? Who cares if the ethnic belief is a little different???

Vinith, grow up and accept that Indian people of all decent should live harmonously... In my country, we have to live with a multiplicity of races, black/ white/ Indian/ Chinese/ etc... here tamil or hindu it makes no difference!!! There is enough racism in the world - there is no need to divide us any further...
Wake Up and stop this disparity, the world could use a lot less small minded individuals!!!

You are providing a good service with your music review- stick to that!

Dear Mr. Proud Inidan,

I'm shocked to see a new meaning for my comments. I never knew that it would convey such a meaning.

My comment was not to create a Disparity or North-South division.

All that I wanted to say is, Tamil Speaking Hariharan, Karthik are better than the non-tamil singers...

We are all Indians. Agree. How can you expect me to digest if some one says "Moli" instead of "Mozhi" etc. Does that sound good???

I'm not against any hindi singer... In every review, I make it clear that "I'm not angry only with singers but with Composers also".
- Angry on Composer for not using Tamil Singers.
- Angry with singers for not learning tamil even after singing 50+ plus songs in Tamil.

I remember Ganja Karuppu's dialogue in Paruthiveeran "Maadu vanga pOrennu thaanya sonnen.. adhukkulla poster varaikkum kondu vandhu uttuteengalE".

Thanks
Vinith.

Dear Vinith,

Thank you for taking the criticism in the spirit it was sent.

I appreciate your response and am delighted to hear that this was not your intention. Lets be honest, a blog is there for anybody to see and we have to be rather careful especially when it can act to influence a young mind.

Take care

Love, light and peace

like YSR but he has NO respect for tamil pronunciation.. if he keeps at it, have to stop listening to his songs.

it sounds AWFUL, even though the music is great. why waste a good song, why can't he make sure the singers pronounce right? can't blame them, they are DIRECTED...

Dear Anon,

You are right. It's high time that Yuvan realizes that his soulful songs are affected due to bad choice of singer. Oru devadhai has superb music and it was done live (live orchestra) and Aedho seigirai is a superb melody. Overall Vamanan is a very good album but spoiled by poor choice of singers. Yes, blame it on yuvan.

Sarvam - another wonderful album but Siragugal and Katrukulle were mercilessly killed by poor choice of singers.
