Playlist: Jan - Jun 2010; Preview : July-Dec 2010

is the list of songs and albums that impressed me in the past six months.

Most listened songs:

> Elelu Thalaimurai, Idhu Varai - Goa, Yuvan Shankar Raja. Yuvan doing an Ilaiyaraja in the former. Idhu Varai, a mind blowing melody with excellent acoustic drums.

> Happy, Sirikkiren - Bale Pandiya, Devan Egambaram. Happy, A Capella song, is a novel attempt. Sirikkiren is a roller coaster ride.

> Missing Something, Un uyirai - Aridhu Aridhu, S Thaman. Thaman songs for this 'terrorism' based movie, prove show his mettle.

> Usure pogudhe, Kaatu sirikki - Rahman is genius. Usure Poguthey is an extraordinary song in the recent times. Brilliant rendition by Karthik. He sure deserves an award for this song.

> Hosanna, Mannippaaya - Vinnai Thandi Varuvaya. Rahman again. Hosanna a peppy number. Mannippaya, though sounded boring initially, picked up later and became one of my favorite songs of 2010. Poetic lyrics by Thamarai.

> Oh Shala, Anbulla Sandhya - Kadhal Solla Vanthen, Yuvan Shankar Raja. Oh Shala is one of the best songs of the year. I prefer this song mainly for the rhythm part of it. Yuvan in decent form.

> Kan thaakudhe, Oru paithiyam pidikkudhu - Baana Kaathadi, Yuvan Shankar Raja. If you see Yuvan's name in the "Singers" section, then go for it. That should be the best song of the album. Here, Kan thakkudhe is.

> Pookal Pookum tharunam - Madharasapattinam, GV Prakash Kumar. Pookkal pookkum is such a killer song. Roop Kumar's is probably the only minus. Any Tamil singer could have been a better choice.

> Haq Se - Striker - Yuvan Shankar Raja. A hindi song by Yuvan, rendered by himself along with Siddharth. No doubt. The song has all the elements to make it worth listening.

> Kodi Kodi aasaigal - Kavalar Kudiyiruppu, James Vasanthan. A killer song. James Vasanth proves that he is not a one-hit wonder. The first interlude in this song is noteworthy.

Albums of the Six months:

> Goa
> Raavanan
> Aridhu Arudhu

No doubt. The first half of 2010, has been really good and very much satisfying. The second half is even more promising with interesting albums lined up. I'm giving the list of albums that I'm looking forward to, in the coming months.

Upcoming, much awaited albums:

1. Nan Mahan Alla, Yuvan Shankar Raja. Expectations have gone sky high after Yuvan tweeted "Iragu pole in NMA is a killer song".

2. Enthiran - AR Rahman-Shankar-Rajni. Three guns of Tamil Film industry. Terrific trio.

3. Aaranya Kaandam - Yuvan Shankar Raja. The promo stills, the cover story about this film in a popular website, and more importantly, the one minute promising teaser trailer have made me look forward to this album. We may get to hear some instrumentals in this album, like Pudhupettai.

4. Aadhi Bagwan - Yuvan Shankar Raja. Ameer is back with a love story. Should we even bother about the music of Yuvan? Wouldn't that be in par with Mounam Pesiyadhe?

5. Selvaraghavan - GV Prakash combo movie. Yeah, it will take time.

A Musical '2009'

Unlike 2008, 2009 has turned out to be a musical year with back to back musical hits. I believe there have been atleast 20+ good albums. I really could not arrive at a list of 10 good songs as there were too many good songs. A tough job indeed.

Here is my list of Top 10 songs that I most visited, of 2009. Not in any order.

1. Kannil Parvai (Nan KAdavul) by Ilayaraja
2. Chinnansirisu (Kungauma Poovum Konjum Puravum) by Yuvan Shankar Raja
3. Oru Vetkam Varudhe (Pasanga) by James Vasanthan
4. Aval Appadi (Angadi Theru) by Vijay Antony
5. Kannil Thagam theerumo (Achchamundu Achamundu) by Karthik Raja
6. Pemmane (also Thaai thindra Manne. Aayirathil Oruvan) by G V Prakash kumar
7. Yogi theme in Sarangi (Yogi) by Yuvan Shankar Raja
8. Mella Oorndhu (Nandhalala) by Ilayaraja. -
9. Thuli Thuli (Paiya) by Yuvan Shankar Raja
10. Katrukulle (Sarvam) by Yuvan Shankar Raja

Smashing soundtracks of the Year:

1. Paiya, Sarvam by Yuvan Shankar Raja.
2. Nan Kadavul by Ilayaraja.
3. Aayirathil Oruvan by GV Prakash Kumar.

Best Music Director of the Year:

Undoubtedly, it is Yuvan Shankar Raja for delivering albums almost every month with quality ranging from average to mind-blowing. He is ready with hands full of projects to repeat the magic in 2010 as well.

I'm back :-)

First half of 2009 has really been great for music lovers. Here is the list of Top 10 Songs. Not in any particular order.

1. Azhagana Neeyum (Muthirai, Yuvan Shankar Raja)
2. Om Sivo ham (Nan Kadavul, Ilayaraja)
3. Vizhi Moodi (Ayan, Harris Jeyaraj)
4. Pemmane (Aayirathil Oruvan, GV Prakash)
5. Oru Vetkam Varudhe (Pasanga, James Vasanthan)
6. Kannil Thaagam (Achchamundu Achamundu, Karthik Raja)
7. Paathi Kadhal (Modhi Vilayadu, Hari Leslie)
8. Aval Appadi ondrum (Angadi Theru, Vijay antony)
9. Yarai Ketpadhu (Vamanan, Yuvan Shankar Raja)
10. Katrukulle (Sarvam, Yuvan Shankar Raja)

Yuvan stands out for his consistent performance. All his six albums (including the one in Telugu. Oye) had great songs. He is in incredible form. Six more albums to come :)

GVP's Aayirathil Oruvan is the best album of the year (first half). That was a smashing album with great classical numbers!

Lets see what the second half has to offer!

Playlist 0409

List of songs that I've been listening to!

Katrukulle (Sarvam), Nee Thane (Sarvam), Adada (Sarvam), Siragugal (Sarvam) - Sarvam is one helluva album from Yuvan.

Vamanan Songs: Oru Devadhai, Yaarai Ketpadhu and Yedho Seigirai. All three melodies are equally good. Yaarai Ketpadhu being my pick. Stunning melodies from Yuvan.

Anbale Azhagana Veedu and Oru Vetkam from Pasanga. Fantastic melodies with excellent vocals. James Vasanthan, you are not a one hit wonder!

Many songs from Pokkisham. Just cannot pick one as Favorite. A very good album from Sabesh-Murali.

Playlist 0109

Here is the list of songs that I've been listening to this month.

* Kannil Paarvai (Shreya Ghosal), Om Siva hum (Vijay Prakash) and Pichai Pathiram (Madhu Balakrishnan) from Naan Kadavul. Almost all the songs from Naan Kadavul are in my playlist with these three being played very often.

* Mella Oorndhu (Ilayaraja) and Onnukkonnu Thunai (KJ Yesudoss) from Nandhalala. Both the numbers are equally soothing. Hmmm... as soothing as a lullaby.

* Vizhi Moodi Yosithal (Karthik) from Ayan. A thumping melody from Harris Jeyaraj.

* Chinnan Sirisu (Javed Ali), Kadaloram (SPB Charan) and Oru Nimisham (Velmurugan) from Kunguma Poovum Konjum Puravum. Yuvan in fine form. A special mention to the haunting lyrics and outstanding vocals in Oru Nimisham.

* Oru Kal Oru Kannadi (Yuvan) and Oru Paarvayil (Ranjith) from Siva Manasula Sakthi (SMS). Rich orchestration in both the songs.

* Masakkali Masakkali from Delhi-6 by AR Rehman. I've only a little exposure to Hindi songs. I love this song. Music arrangement in this song is very innovative. First time I'm listening to such a stunning orchestration. This songs gives a different feel. Words fail me. Thumbs Up Oscar Nayagan AR Rahman.

* Mudhal Murai (Harini, Hariharan, Tippu) from Adhe Neram Adhe Idam. A good melody by Premji.

Great songs of 2008:

If I prepare a list of 10 Songs, it is a bit out of complacency. So I'm presenting a list of top 15 Tamil songs of 2008. The following are the songs I most frequently listened to this year. Each one of them is nothing short of a Gem number.

Worst compositions of the year:

This list represents the worst songs of this year. This list doesn't contain the songs of new comers but the worst songs composed by matured, talented and established music directors.

My Current Playlist - Dec08

These are the songs which are in my current playlist. And, these are the few songs which impressed me in last two-three months. Yes, very less numbers.

* All songs from Varanam Aayiram (Harris Jeyaraj) except Yethi Yethi. Best album of the year. Hats off to Harris.

* Machan Machan from Silambattam (Yuvan Shankar Raja). Matured orchestration. Ilayaraja's rendition is another plus.

* Uyiril Yedho from Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu (Selva Ganesh) - A soothing melody with nice keyboard touch in the background. One of the top melodies of the year.

* Avarmpoo and Chu chu maari from Poo (SS Kumaran) - Both are gem numbers.

* Megam Pola from Aanandha Thandavam (GV Prakash) - One of the best of Shankar Mahadevan. Second interlude being the highlight of the song.

Well, we are at the end of the year. I'm preparing the list of best songs of the year 2008. Watch out this space. :)

My Current Play List - July 2008

Here is the list of latest songs am currently listening to!

1. Marudhani - Sakkarakatti - AR Rehman

ARR is back with his trademark melody. A feminine song with beautiful lyrics. Madhushree's voice is another plus. The keyboard/piano in the first interlude is enthralling. The ostinato "Marudhani vizhiyil" chorus is another "rango rangoli" which would be liked by all. The song would go well with the masses.

2. Saroja songs - Yuvan Shankar Raja

Cheeky, My life, Kodanu kodi and dosthu bada dosthu songs from this album are in loop. Refreshing Cheeky, Heavy metal My Life, Kuthu Kodanu Kodi and rhythmic Dosthu are all excellent compostions from Yuvan. Yuvan would surely win youngsters' hearts with this techno album.

3. Kahdal Siluvayil, Kangal Irandal - Subramaniapuram - James Vasanthan

Composer's debut composition is definitely promising. These two songs showcase his talents. Kahdal Siluvaiyil and Kangal irandal, both are refreshing composition with matured orchestration. The symphony in the former and the flute-symphony 2nd interlude in the latter enrich the quality of the songs. Shankar Mahadevan's vocals in Kadhal siluvayil is awesome.

4. Abinayam Kaatugindra, Pularkindra pozhudhu - Uliyin Osai - Ilayaraja

Uliyin Osai should be the best album of Ilayaraja in the recent times. All the songs are catchy in this album. Abinayam is a classical composition that reminds you of Azhagu Malarada song. Bombay Jayashree vocals are great plus points. Pularkindra pozhudhu song is another pick in the album with mindblowing orchestration. No other composer except Raaja could have given life to this album which needs a classical touch in all the songs. Once again Raaja at his best in using classical instruments such as Mridhangam, Flute, Violin etc.

5. Jaane tu meri kya hai (Jai) - Jane tu ya jane na - AR Rehman

A melody song with amazing vocals and mindblowing orchestration. An excellent song from this genius. The smooth flowing symphony in the 1st interlude is truly mesmerising. The chorus "Jaana..." is too good. "Kahin To" from this movie is also in my playlist.

My Current Playlist. Here is the list of songs am currently listening to.

1. Pudhu Pudhu from Dham Dhoom by Harris

Sounds like a Club number. A peppy song from Harris. Benny's vocals is a great plus. Amazing orchestration and instrunment handling. This is one good number from harris after Thoodhu Varuma, IMO. Genuinity of this song is a Question Mark. Coz, Of late, Harris is getting caught very often. One of the songs in Varanamayiram, Adiye Kolludhe (which they released to promote the album) has been lifted from West - Love Bomb.

2. Yengeyo Partha Mayakkam from Yaradi Nee Mohini by Yuvan.

A pleasant melody. Lyrics speak it all. Expressing how a boy feels when he meets his girl. Udit's atrocious vocals spoil the song completely. Rather than calling Udit as atrocious, I would prefer writing atrocious Yuvan killing this song by asking Udit to render. Tabla usage is mesmerising. Yuvan has managed to maintain the rhythm throughout the song which makes the flow of the song undisturbed.

3. Mukundha Mukundha from Dasavatharam by Himesh.

Sadhana Sargam's rendering for this song takes the song to next level. Saw the picturisation now in Audio Releasing function (telecast in Kalaignar TV). Looked good. Asin acts in this song. IMO, orchestration of this song has strong hindi flavor (beats etc).

4. Anbe Enanbe from Dham Dhoom by Harris.

A soothing melody with fantastic rendering by Harish Ragavendra. Harish is back after a brief hiatus. Excellent Rendering. Especially when he raises his pitch in "malaiyinile pirakkum nadhi" lines. The flute piece as prelude, interlude and postlude is good. am sure you'll enjoy this track.

5. Uyirile from Vellithirai by GV Prakash

A pleasant soothing number with minimal beats and orchestration. This one proves that this young composer is really talented. Naresh Iyer's rendering needs a special mention here.

6. Paravaye Engu Irukkirai from Tamil MA by Yuvan.

Even though the song is 8 months old, it is still there in my list. Youngest raja has proven that he would deliver the best quality if the movie demands. Understanding the theme of the movie, yuvan has delevered the best music in this movie. This is not only for this movie, also the best of Yuvan. The background beats in this song is very very innovative. Ilayaraja's vocals would simply move you. The guitar piece is the second prelude is truly mesmerizing. As a whole, this song is worth listening many times.
